On the Go with Baby in Tow

north jersey doulas on the go with baby baby bag

Some things to consider when traveling by air with your baby are, do you have all of your essentials!?! Remember, you can't just pull over and stop at a store. So pack a diaper bag and if you happen to bottle feed with formula, pack both formula and distilled water (make sure its all unopened) along with a couple bottles. If pumped milk, pack some packets in a cooler and grab your pump while you're at it. Pack a baby carrier, swaddles, extra weather appropriate clothes based on both being in the plane and where your destinations are (extra clothes for both yourself and your baby). Definitely pack ample diapers, wipes and rash cream. Bonus if your baby uses a pacifier as it will help induce the swallowing reflex to help with their ears adjusting.

A few other big-ticket items to consider when you're traveling by plane: Pack a stroller that has a detachable car seat in case you decide to buy a seat where you can put the car seat. This is certainly the safer way to travel and has its other obvious perks as well. Some people opt to just hold their baby if it's under the age of one as the baby is then free. This option would be more conducive to a shorter flight.

When traveling by car, I recommend having all of the same things I suggested above, but not the end of the world if you forget something and happen to be nearby a convenience store. The main difference is planning out feeding times- these should be based around planned stops for safety purposes to not feed a baby in a moving vehicle. Take a little extra time when doing a road trip and give yourself buffer days in-between coming and going so you are not doing it back-to-back with work so then everyone can adjust gradually
