How Do I Care for Myself in the Postpartum Time Period?
Starting while you are in the hospital, stay on top of pain management. Use aspirin as needed. Sometimes pain medication may become necessary and a schedule may also be needed for when to take it because that makes it easier to stay on top of vs. having to catchup. Pain medication may cause constipation so don't be shy about taking those stool softeners they give you in the hospital!
Hydration and proper nutrition are also super important. Make sure to have a water bottle strategically place in each room you're sure to go in. Eat an additional 400-500 calories a day if you're breastfeeding
When help is offered, take it. Start taking initiative yourself when pregnant and have a friend or family member spearhead a postpartum meal train setup.
Get help with cleaning-triage what absolutely must be done and have others who visit do the rest i.e. laundry, dishwasher. keep a note on the fridge if you feel uncomfortable verbally asking for help. It could be your "wish list" for when others visit.
Last and certainly not least, rest! It will help speed up your recovery and make it overall smoother, so be sure to make it top priority.
