What To Expect with Postpartum Bleeding

Postpartum Bleeding is called Lochia

There are three phases of Lochia, each having a different appearance. Lochia Rubra (Days 1-4): Bright red, heavy flow with small clots, similar to a heavy menstrual period. It may have a fleshy odor. Lochia Serosa (Days 4-10): Pinkish brown in color, lighter flow, and fewer clots. This stage involves more watery discharge as bleeding slows down. Lochia Alba (Days 10-6 weeks): Yellowish-white or creamy discharge. Very light flow, mostly mucus with minimal blood.

When to Contact a Healthcare Provider:

-If you notice large clots (bigger than a golf ball)

-If the discharge has a foul smell

-If bleeding becomes very heavy again (soaking a pad in an hour)

-If you experience severe pain or fever
